The New Ford Puma 2020 Review in Newzealand
The new Puma urban SUV has been confirmed by Ford NZ as arriving later on this year. Ford says it will introduce "inspiring style and unmistakable design, stand-out convenience and technical innovation".
Puma recently took out the UK’s What Car? Car of the Year award 2020. It scored well on the fuel efficiency front, along with being "fun-to-drive, cleverly packaged and well-priced".
Puma is an new urban SUV built in Europe and will complement the new-generation 2020 Ford Escape. It will not replace EcoSport as it is slightly larger than that.
Simon Rutherford, Ford NZ’s Managing Director, said of the new Puma “It’s fun-to-drive, stylish and loaded with smart technology. We’re looking forward to getting customers behind the wheel.”
Puma bucks the trend for wedge-style crossover side profiles - it has a flatter beltline - and features a low, sloping roofline for a recognisable silhouette. We can’t help thinking they copied the Nissan Juke however, particularly where the front end is concerned. ST-Line models get DRLs inspired by Ford’s GT supercar.
The five-door SUV uses Fiesta platform but is 46mm longer, 54mm higher, 71mm wider and has a 95mm longer wheelbase than its donor car. Ride height is higher than Fiesta’s too.
There’s more Fiesta influence in the cabin with a similar dash and the SYNC3 infotainment system. Ford offers active cruise control, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, and lane-keep assist as standard on some models.
A wide-angle rear camera offers 180 degrees of vision and both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. On the practicality front, boot space is rated at 456L, helped by a low-set cargo floor.
Expect more details on models, specs and pricing closer to the time of introduction.

While no NZ-specific details have been offered, there is a 1.0-litre turbo triple with a 48-volt mild hybrid system available overseas, coming in either 92kW/170NM or 114kW/190Nm flavours. We doubt whether the 48-volt bits will make it for market though, but expect whatever engine that is offered to be mated to an auto trans of some sort, likely driving the front wheels alone.
